In recent years, there were many business clients suffered from major financial losses due to email fraud (or, phishing). According to 2019 government information, there were 752 reported cases in Hong Kong during the year, and the average loss in each case was 3.4million. In fact, the story lines for most cases are basically the same and it is possible to avoid it if one is more cautious!

In the scam, criminals usually send an email which appeared to be a known source to the victim and made legitimate request in the email such as using the name of the vendor of the company to send an invoice with a different payment account or acting as the manager to instruct the assistant to wire payment.

If such an unfortunate event arises, the victim should report to police as soon as possible and seek legal assistance to recover their losses.
